Güreşen Cable-Stayed Bridge Project: Muratlı-Güreşen Junction Bridge and Connecting Roads Project
Cable-Stayed Bridge
Project Owner: 10th Regional Directorate of Highways – Trabzon Regional Directorate
Contractor: AKM SNH Joint Venture
Project Start Date: 2017
Sunko Proje is undertaking a significant project on the Borçka-Camili (Dokap) Road, located at the Georgia-Turkey border, involving the construction of the Muratlı-Güreşen Junction Bridge and its connecting roads. Initially, a balanced cantilever bridge was designed to cross the Muratlı Dam, with alternative designs also proposed.
However, due to site conditions, the placement of the balanced cantilever bridge piers within the dam reservoir became necessary. When considering the environmental impacts, the reservoir fill was deemed unfavorable by the authorities. As a result, the design shifted towards a cable-stayed bridge to span the reservoir without filling it.

Structural Features
Back Span Deck:
- Length: 90 meters
- Construction Method: Cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete system
What is Cast-in-Place Post-Tensioned Concrete and How Does It Work?
The cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete system is a commonly used construction method in bridge decks and large structures. In this system, concrete structural elements are poured on-site, and then post-tensioned using special steel cables or tendons. Post-tensioning involves applying pre-stress to concrete elements, enhancing their tensile strength. This method increases the durability of the bridge while allowing for thinner structural elements, reducing the overall weight. Additionally, the cast-in-place method helps manage potential mismatches and tolerances during construction. Using this system in the back span deck ensures the stability and longevity of the bridge.
Main Span Deck:
- Structural System: Orthotropic steel deck
What is an Orthotropic Steel Deck and How Does It Work?
An orthotropic steel deck is a structural system widely used in bridge decks. This system involves steel plates (decks) supported in both transverse (ortho) and longitudinal (tropic) directions, increasing their strength. The orthotropic system provides high strength while reducing weight, increasing the bridge’s load-carrying capacity and durability. This ensures the longevity of bridges and compliance with high safety standards. Sunko Proje has used this system in the main span deck of the Muratlı-Güreşen Junction Bridge, ensuring that the bridge is both lightweight and durable.
Foundation System
Foundation Type:
Bored pile deep foundation
What is a Bored Pile Deep Foundation and Why is it Needed?
A bored pile deep foundation is a type of foundation used for large and heavy structures. This foundation system is employed when the soil’s bearing capacity is insufficient, transferring the structure’s loads to deeper and more stable soil layers. Bored piles are large-diameter, cylindrical piles, typically made of reinforced concrete. After being placed into the ground, the piles transfer the structure’s loads, ensuring stability even under poor soil conditions.
The bored pile deep foundation system plays a critical role in large engineering projects like the Muratlı-Güreşen Junction Bridge, ensuring the stability and durability of the bridge. This system allows the bridge to safely carry heavy loads and withstand adverse soil conditions. By using this foundation system, Sunko Proje guarantees the long-term safety and sustainability of the bridge.
Cable-Stayed Bridge: A New Trend in Turkey
The cable-stayed bridge is an emerging trend in bridge design in Turkey, and its use in the Muratlı-Güreşen Junction Bridge adds an innovative approach to the project. This type of bridge, with a single pylon and a 238-meter main span, stands out as a notable example of advancing engineering solutions in Turkey. The cable-stayed bridge offers high structural durability and an aesthetically pleasing appearance while minimizing environmental impacts and ensuring a long-lasting structure.
Sunko Proje has successfully realized this project by aiming for the highest standards in cable-stayed bridge design. The durability, safety, and environmental harmony of the bridge are the key features that set this project apart from others.
Construction of the Muratlı-Güreşen Junction Bridge and connecting roads is progressing rapidly. This strategic bridge is set to provide safer and more comfortable transportation between Borçka and Camili, while also aiming to boost the region’s tourism potential. Modern technologies and innovative engineering solutions have been employed in the project, with construction work meticulously carried out since 2021 and every stage carefully documented.
The completion of this project will mark the beginning of a new era for the region’s residents. The Muratlı-Güreşen Junction Bridge and connecting roads will not only facilitate transportation but also enhance access to the region’s natural beauty, contributing to the development of tourism.
Sunko Proje remains committed to quality and sustainability at every stage, working tirelessly to ensure the successful completion of this important project.
