Söğütlüçeşme High Speed Train Station Post-Tensioned Viaduct Project

Sunko Proje A.Ş. has successfully completed the design of the Söğütlüçeşme Post-Tensioned Viaduct as part of one of Istanbul’s most significant transportation projects, the High Speed Train (HST) Station Project. Located in the Hasanpaşa and Zühtüpaşa neighborhoods of Kadıköy district, this important structure is situated on the HST and platform line, contributing to the rapidly developing transportation infrastructure of Istanbul.

The project was carried out under the contract signed on February 14, 2022, with Fıratcan İnşaat Turizm ve Ticaret A.Ş., a subsidiary of Akfen Group. The viaduct, designed by Sunko Proje A.Ş.’s experienced engineering team, is part of TCDD’s High Speed Train Post-Tensioned Viaduct and Terminal Project located in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district.

Project Details:

  • Project Name: SÖĞÜTLÜÇEŞME HIGH SPEED TRAIN STATION POST-TENSIONED VIADUCT DESIGN
  • Project Line Length: 696 m
  • Main Bridge: 484 m (2820 m²) – 17-span prefabricated beam + post-tensioned box section
  • Platform Bridge: 210 m (1350 m²) – 7-span prefabricated beam

Given that Istanbul is located in a high seismic risk area, solutions to minimize the impact of earthquakes were of utmost importance in this project. Sunko Proje A.Ş. used the latest technologies and engineering methods in the design of the post-tensioned viaduct to ensure the structural integrity during an earthquake. The project incorporated post-tensioned technology, which is critical for high-speed train structures. This technology enhances the durability of the bridge, ensuring structural safety even in the event of an earthquake.

The design process was carried out in accordance with the guidelines for the design of highway and railway bridges and viaducts under seismic effects. Linear and non-linear analyses were performed, and soil-structure interaction analyses for the bridge piles were conducted using non-linear methods to ensure the optimal performance of the structure. These analyses are crucial for maximizing the seismic performance of the bridge.

Seismic Performance and Continuous Operation: One of the critical aspects of this project is that it was designed to maintain continuous operation under DD-2A seismic ground motion level. This seismic level requires the bridge to continue functioning even during a major earthquake. To achieve this, Sunko Proje A.Ş. conducted detailed seismic analyses and developed solutions to maximize the durability of the structural components. The use of post-tensioned box section technology and prefabricated beams were key factors contributing to this high seismic performance.

Sunko Proje A.Ş. maintained high-quality standards throughout the project, meeting all the requirements set by the client and the authorities, and successfully completed the approval processes. The project received full marks during inspections by the authorities, adhering to the principles of art and science.

The Söğütlüçeşme Post-Tensioned Viaduct stands out as a significant structure supporting the rapid and safe transportation of Istanbul. Sunko Proje A.Ş. is proud to have been part of such a prestigious project and is delighted to have once again demonstrated its engineering expertise.
